Arykanda
Built over five terraces along the slopes of the Bey Mountains, this once-thriving Lycian settlement is one of the most stunning ancient cities to explore. Dating back to the 4th century BC, Arykanda was part of the Lycian League and later on flourished under Roman rule before being abandoned in the 9th century.
What makes Arykanda special is how its ruins cascade down the mountainside. At the lower terraces, you’ll find a massive two-story bath complex, a gymnasium, and a collonaded agora. Higher up, there’s a small but elegant odeon, a 2nd-century theatre with valley views, and a stadium. The upper terraces hold another agora, a bouleuterion (council chamber), and remnants of temples dedicated to Trajan and Helios.
Despite its beauty, Arykanda remains quiet and untouched. History and nature lovers can take their time wandering through the ruins, imagining life in this mountain city.
To reach Arykanda by car, take the D400 turnoff at Finike and head north for 30 KM. Dolmuşes (public transportation) from Finike to Elmalı can drop you at the base of the hill, where you will have to continue on a steep 3 KM walk. You can also take a taxi from Demre, which is about 29 KM away.
