SURUGA Marketing & Tourism Bureau

Suruga region, an area in Shizuoka Prefecture where the majestic peaks of the Southern Alps and the deepest bay in Japan are connected by picturesque views and scenery throughout, all with Mt. Fuji as our background.

Suruga is known as the “Tea Country”, where around 40% of all green tea is grown and harvested, and approximately 70% of all green tea throughout Japan is sent to our region for processing and blending.

Our organization is deeply invested in creating a destination ready for community-based tourism, where the emphasis will be placed on experiences and locations where travelers will be able to invest into the local community and their livelihoods directly.

Experience related with Japan Tea

Due to a variety of factors, the number of tea farmers in the region is decreasing. So as a destination organization, we have focused on activities that encourage not only the consumption of Shizuoka’s Japan Tea, but on interacting with the people of the industry that is only possible here in the Suruga Region. Go to a tea farmer’s house and learn about the process of creating Japan tea, hear about their stories, and even obtain the secrets of making the perfect cup of Japan tea.

Through experiences such as the one listed above, we are working diligently to ensure that the tea industry can continue for generations to come, and that tourism can be one way of sustainable to them.

Japan‘s deepest SURUGA bay

The lives of people here in the Suruga Region have relied on the bay, with all the ingredients to make everything from bonito flakes, dried skipjack tuna, dashi (a Japanese type of soup stock), to exquisite seafood dishes, all from the bay. Generations of fishermen and craftsmen dot the coastlines of the bay. Immerse yourself in our culture by seeing the entire process from boat-to-table, where you can meet the people of the area who specialize in bringing in the treasures of the bay while also getting the gastoronomy of the Suruga region with local produce. And don't forget of the pairing with Suruga's Japan tea.

SURUGA’s traditional culture & Arts

Visit the craftsmen at their workshops who have been working for generations to hone their craft and that represents the best that Suruga has to offer. Listen to their stories and history as they show you around their workshops and even learn how to make your own unique piece to take home with you. From Shitoroyaki, a tea-based pottery that utilizes the same clay that would be used for growing the tea fields, to tea dyeing, an art form that takes tea leaves that are traditionally thrown away to create a unique dye, we have plenty to offer.
