Derinkuyu & Kaymaklı Underground Cities

Beneath the surreal landscapes of Cappadocia lies a hidden yet gargantuan world – an extraordinary network of underground cities carved into the region’s ancient volcanic rock thousands of years ago awaits to be uncovered by travellers.

With over 200 of these incredible underground marvels scattered across the region, including the fascinating Özkonak, Tatlarin, and Mazi, it’s no wonder Cappadocia is a must-see for adventure seekers. But it’s the legendary Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı that truly steal the spotlight, offering travellers a thrilling glimpse into this captivating subterranean world!

Derinkuyu Underground City

Plunging 85 meters deep with 18 levels of tunnels, this vast subterranean metropolis once sheltered up to 20,000 people, making it one of the largest excavated underground cities in the world.

Ingeniously designed with stables, living quarters, wineries, schools, and even a chapel, it was in near-constant use for centuries as a refuge from invasions. Abandoned in the 1920s and rediscovered in 1963, Derinkuyu remains one of the most awe-inspiring engineering marvels of the ancient world.

Kaymaklı Underground City

Kaymaklı is one of the oldest underground cities in Cappadocia, with its network of tunnels and chambers carved eight levels deep. However, only four levels are open for travellers to explore the low, narrow, and steeply inclined tunnels. (If you are tall or claustrophobic, do note that these maze-like passageways might be a bit tight and require some stooping to navigate!)

While the tunnels are smaller compared to those in Derinkuyu, Kaymaklı remains one of the most accessible underground cities in the region, and can even be explored without a guide.

What’s the difference between the 2?

Although both Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, they each bring something unique to the table. Here’s what you need to know to decide which one to explore:

  1. Crowd Factor: If you like a quieter experience, Kaymaklı is your go-to, especially during peak season. Derinkuyu, however, can get pretty packed when the tourists roll in, so be prepared for the crowd if you go there!

  2. Size and Layout: Kaymaklı is more compact, making it easier to explore on your own. Meanwhile, Derinkuyu is grand and sprawling, with more hidden corners and exciting places to discover.
