Uçhisar

Uçhisar is a captivating town known for its iconic Uçhisar Castle, a towering rock formation that offers panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and fairy chimneys. The town's rock-cut dwellings, churches, and tunnels reflect its role as a sanctuary for early Christians fleeing persecution. It makes sense why it is often referred to as the "Outer Citadel" due to its strategic location and historical significance as a defensive stronghold.

Uçhisar Rock Castle (Uçhisar Kalesi)

A must-visit landmark known as the highest point in the region, this towering rock formation once served as a natural fortress that provided strategic defence and shelter for local communities for centuries during the Byzantine era.

Climb to the top of the castle and soak in the mesmerising vistas of the Valley of Pigeons and Mount Erciyes, or explore its labyrinth of tunnels and chambers that once housed entire villages.

Güvercinlik (the Valley of Pigeons)

The Valley earned its name from the countless man-made dovecotes (Pigeon Houses) that have been carved into the soft volcanic tuff. Pigeons once played a vital role in Cappadocia, providing food and fertiliser for the region's infertile soil. Though their importance has faded, their rock-carved homes remain preserved atop pillars and inside caves.

For a breathtaking experience, explore the valley from above on a hot air balloon tour, floating above the stunning landscape as the sun rises. This valley is also an easy hiking trail which connects Göreme and Uçhisar, perfect if you’re planning to visit both attractions.
