İstiklal Caddesi

İstiklal Street, stretching 1.4 kilometers from Taksim Square to Tünel, is a cornerstone of Istanbul’s cultural and social life. This pedestrian avenue, lined with stately buildings and narrow passages, hosts an array of bookstores, art galleries, theatres, cinemas, patisseries, restaurants, and taverns.

Famous for its vibrant atmosphere, İstiklal is also known for its iconic red nostalgic tram, which carries passengers between historic landmarks like St. Antoine’s Church, Galatasaray High School, and the Narmanlı Inn. The inviting aromas of street food — from freshly baked simits (ring-shaped bread sprinkled with sesame seeds) to roasted chestnuts — add to the sensory experience. Cultural highlights include Salt Beyoğlu, the Pera Museum, and the Atatürk Cultural Centre at Taksim Square.

A hub for art and history for over a century, İstiklal continues to thrive as a cultural destination. The Beyoğlu Culture Route Festival, held annually as part of the Turkish Culture Route Festivals, celebrates this vibrant legacy with hundreds of events and artworks.
