Curated Coffee Tasting with PATA Australia UQ Student Chapter

Brisbane, Australia - It is no secret that Australians are coffee obsessed - 1.3 million coffees are sold every day in Australia. However, coffee culture is not just about quantity but quality so on October 3rd PATA Australia UQ Student Chapter held an intimate event for members to tour a local, specialty coffee roastery and learn the art of coffee tasting. This event was held at Blue Sky Coffee Roastery in Brisbane Australia and provided an insight into owning, managing and marketing a small hospitality business while learning coffee cupping and the coffee buying process.

Attendees met with the owner and 2019 Australian coffee tasting champion Callum Jubb and began the session by enjoying a variety of fruits, chocolate and ginger beer to develop common flavour notes before the coffee tasting began. Coffee tasting is big business, with professional coffee tasters around the world employed to buy up big for local cafes and franchises. However, through the tasting session with Callum attendees were also able to develop their understanding about the impact of buying fair trade coffee, above market price, to ensure farmers are fairly rewarded for the work put into growing beans. After tasting coffees from Venezuela, Ethiopia and Sumatra attendees learnt about the roasting process and then chose a bag of beans to take home.

PATA Australia UQ member Jasmine Csetoth, reflected on her experience attending the event saying  “The coffee tasting was a great experience for me, as a coffee enthusiast I got the chance to taste some amazing coffee that I would have never had the chance to try, and learn so much information about the industry itself.”

After a challenging year due to social gathering restrictions, this event was one that enabled members to come together in a safe way and PATA Australia UQ Student Chapter hopes that it provided just a ‘taste’ of what’s to come in 2021.
