PATA Malaysia Taylor's Student Chapter's Webinar on Sustainable Tourism and Rural Development

Subang Jaya, Malaysia, 31st October 2020 - PATA Malaysia Taylor's Student Chapter (PATA MTSC) organized the first virtual webinar on 'Sustainable Tourism and Rural Development' last 31st October 2020. The webinar aimed to introduce Rural Tourism and its contribution to Sustainable Tourism initiatives among tourism students. Dr Puvaneswaran Kunasekaran, a Senior Lecturer of the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Events of Taylor's University, was invited as a guest speaker of this virtual event. This session was conduction via the zoom application.

Dr. Puvaneswaran obtained his PhD in Community Development and Tourism from the University Putra Malaysia and researched community-based tourism, indigenous tourism, sustainable tourism practices and cultural tourism studies. In addition, he has delivered keynote speeches in various countries, including China and India, on contemporary sustainable tourism issues. Apart from active research involvement, he is also involved in community development projects, mainly in the rural areas of Malaysia, by creating community capacity using tourism as a tool.

Approximately 120 participants (consisting of students, academicians and PATA MTSC members) joined this session. The webinar began at 11 am with a welcoming speech by Ms Kuhavati (facilitator of the event). She welcomed all participants and explained the agenda of the event. Dr. Joaquim Dias Soeiro, the Head of School of Hospitality, Tourism and Events of Taylor's University provided opening remarks and thanked Dr. Puvaneswaran for being the event's guest speaker. Dr. Puvaneswaran provided a good explanation of rural tourism and its contribution to sustainable tourism initiatives. Then, Ms Teresa Dines (the moderator of the event) conducted the Q&A session. The session was ended at 12.30 pm with few announcements on PATA-MTSC upcoming actives. It was a fruitful session for all participants and a great experience for PATA MTSC on conducting a virtual event.
