PATA Capilano University Student Chapter Released New Podcast Episode About Women in Tourism
Vancouver, Canada, 1st March, 2021 – “The Gender Pay Gap. Discrimination. Work/Life Balance Challenges. Lack of advancement opportunities. Retention challenges. Sexual Harassment. Occupational Gender Segregation. Bias. These topics only scratch the surface in examining the complex landscape for women in hospitality and tourism leadership” (WORTH Association, 2020). Despite Capilano University’s current asynchronous learning setting due to COVID-19, The What in the World in Travel podcast continues to release monthly episodes. The PATA Canada Vancouver Student Chapter’s dedicated executive members are still working diligently to produce the podcasts. This podcast is the second episode to be released during the 2021 series. More podcast episodes are scheduled to release monthly this year.
This month’s episode was hosted by Chairperson Alanna Marrington and Producer Kenna Koronko who are members of the PATA Canada Vancouver Student Chapter and featured Joanna Jagger, President and founder of WORTH Association (Women of Recreation, Tourism, and Hospitality. Joanna is a Convenor and Instructor in the School of Tourism Management at Capilano University. She has held leadership roles in sales, catering and human resources at top brands including Marriott International, Shangri-La Hotels, Sequoia Company of Restaurants and Joe Fortes.
In this episode, Joanna brings her experience as a woman in the tourism industry to the table by sharing her take on difficult workplace subjects for women. She starts off by giving some staggering facts about women in tourism that truly paint a picture of how discriminatory tourism can be. Joanna also shared that gendered titles such as “busboy” or “hostess” actively create barriers for people of all genders. When asked about what advice she had for women entering the tourism industry, Joanna shared “be loud!” Listen to the full episode to learn more about Joanna’s experiences as a woman in the industry and the types of inequality women in this industry face every day.
